What a scorcher! Staying safe in the sun

Thursday 26th July 2018

Who would have thought that 2018 would be the year where England would reach the semi-finals in the world cup and we would have had endless opportunities for BBQs due to the relentless sunshine!

As much as we are enjoying the weather, it is really important that we all stay safe in the undying heat. Here are a few helpful tips we have found to keep cool in the office:

  • Keep any blinds down
  • Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to mimic air conditioning (perhaps check with your IT department first about being near equipment!)
  • Freeze your water bottles
  • Ask for a fan
  • Get a cooling mat
  • Make sure you turn off any items that you are not using (also good for the planet!)
  • Have ice cream breaks!
  • Make sure you wear sun cream

Unfortunately, in the news I am sure we have seen the devastating impact of fires due to the hot weather. The sun dries out the ground which significantly raises the risk of fires. Moreover, fires are also more likely to occur for longer and more intensely. Fires are more likely to start in offices due to the heat affecting the equipment. To help reduce the risk around the office, here are a few handy tips:

  • Do not over air vents on units and this can cause overheating
  • Don’t overload electrical sockets and extension leads
  • Keep a look out on the condition of wiring around the office – anything looking a bit worse for wear let your IT team know
  • Make sure all fire doors are kept closed
  • Make sure fire escapes and all corridors/walk way areas are completely clear
  • Keep your clean desk policy i.e. don’t print off paper unless necessary as this can help fuel a fire if it happens

Here at Performance in People (PiP) we take fire safety very seriously and complete a regular Fire Marshal course. The course teaches designated staff members fire regulations and what the office can do to reduce the risk. It is vital to help keep your work place safe that some individuals receive training on this.

Our PiPsters really enjoyed the course and it provided an excellent opportunity for team building. They bravely tackled blazes, learned to operate fire extinguishers correctly and how to effectively evacuate the building. In the pictures below, you can also see that they received very fetching outfits!
