Fundraising for Earl Mountbatten Hospice: Walk the Wight & Sandcastle Competition

Tuesday 16th May 2017

This month has been a busy month on the Isle of Wight as everyone has been working together to fundraise for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Earl Mountbatten Hospice is an independent charity and national leader in providing expert medical, nursing and end of life care and bereavement support to over 600 people in their own homes on any one day. They also offer a range of other specialist services including expert psychological support, creative and complementary therapies and an Island-wide bereavement service which supports adults, as well as families and children.

The hospice could not provide the care and support without the help and fundraising activities within the community.

Now in its 27th year, Earl Mountbatten Hospice's unique and world famous 26.5 mile walk annually attracts thousands of people to walk across the breadth of the beautiful Isle of Wight countryside, from Bembridge in the east, to Alum Bay in the west.  Figures recorded over 8,200 men, women, children and dogs took part in Walk the Wight this year and numbers were boosted by just under 1,000 people who registered on the day itself.

Now in it’s 7th year, hundreds of people made their way down to Appley Beach last weekend to take part in Bill West's Absent Friends Sandcastle Competition.

This competition was started by Bill himself just a week or so after New Year 2011 and on a cold Sunday, January 17th with a number of his close family members and friends. Sadly, Bill passed away just three months later on April 22nd but made his sister Sharon promise to keep his spirit alive through the building of sandcastles every year. All money raised was to go direct to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice who he appreciated for their care in the final year of his life.

This is a cause very close to Performance in People’s (PiP’s) programme co-ordinator, Holly West, and PiP wanted to show their support for her family and the Hospice. This year the competition raised a whopping £1753.30, bringing the grand total to £11,333.34 over the past 7 years. This amount included £193 worth of raffle tickets purchased by members of staff, along with a healthy £100 donation from PiP.

Raffle prizes from this year’s competition included:

  • X2 Isle of Wight Festival Tickets
  • X2 Camp Bestival Tickets
  • A meal for two at the Three Buoys
  • Cineworld voucher
  • Spa Voucher
  • Tapnell Farm voucher
  • And much more!

The competition invites everyone to join in the heart-warming fun, have a smile on their face, and place a flag on their castle for your Absent Friend. If you would like to donate and show your support for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice it’s not too late! Please visit the JustGiving page here:
