Types of Mystery Shopping Performance in People Offer

Covert Video Mystery Shoppers

A mystery shopper posing as a customer will use covert camera equipment to record an entire shopping experience and can expect to visit a variety of outlets. In order to qualify for this you will need to own, or be willing to buy covert filming equipment of the required standard. Travelling can be expected in order to be a Mystery Shopper. Your willingness to travel and general availability will determine the amount of work which can be offered. Full training can be provided in London or the West Midlands if required; this training is included with certain purchases of covert kit from Performance in People (further details can be supplied). You will be able to start Video Mystery Shopping assignments as soon as you have successfully completed the training.

Report-Only Mystery Shoppers

As a Report-only Mystery Shopper, you will conduct assignments in your local area or further afield and simply fill out a questionnaire after your visit via our website. There a variety of assignments available from our broad client base and the distance you choose to travel is completely up to you. You will be given guidance on your reports through office feedback and you will be supported on every visit completed. It’s a simple, effective method and you will be paid for every successful assignment.

Telephone Mystery Shoppers

You can be a Mystery Shopper by conducting evaluations over the phone. As well as Mystery Shopping, these calls may also include research or Customer Satisfaction Surveys. The calls are recorded with our recording system from your own home and the timing of these calls can be flexible within your working day. Regional accents can be very useful as we conduct calls to a broad range of clients across the UK. 

Audio Mystery Shoppers

An Audio Mystery Shopper will have to complete a physical visit and record conversations using a covert audio device. This is provided by PiP before the visit and must be returned. The equipment is very easy to use and you will be provided with full guidance. You can choose to complete visits locally or travel further afield. As well as recording the visit, you will be required to fill out a quick report online with your personal feedback via our website. Audio Mystery Shop visits tend to be for banking clients to measure compliance. 

Housekeeping Auditors

Sometimes mystery shopping visits include checks on general housekeeping standards, stock levels and customer facilities. To include this in a mystery shop would mean an assessor acting in an unnatural way. As a housekeeping auditor, you will visit a client’s branch or store and declare the purpose of the visit and that you work for PiP. These visits take approximately between 20 and 30 minutes and as these are declared visits, you can go back every time when activity is conducted. These visits are very high in demand so availability is small.

Mailing Addressee Only

For this type, simply your address will be used as part of Mystery Shopping evaluations. Every time your address is utilised in this way, an entry will be made on your behalf into a quarterly cash prize draw. When your address is used, you will be emailed with details of the how it has been used and then if you receive any postal information, it can be disposed of. 

Mailing Addressee and Postal Forwarding

This is the same as a Mail Addressee Only, however rather than disposing of the post received, it should be redirected (free of charge) to our offices. Each time a postal item is forwarded, you will receive payment (or gift voucher).

Home Addressee

Performance in People carries out a number of filmed evaluations in customers' homes. This involves one of our professional Mystery Shoppers conducting the evaluation at a time and date convenient to both parties. Our Mystery Shopper would arrive prior to the appointment and evaluations can typically last up to two hours. We may ask for some property details to help us match your property to the right mystery shops. 

Email Mystery Shopper

Email Mystery Shoppers typically send enquiries to our clients' websites and monitor the type and speed of response from the recipient. The findings are then passed on to Performance in People by the Mystery Shopper, either by email or in the form of an online report. Payment is made for each enquiry conducted.

  • Specsavers
    Performance in People (PiP) is thrilled to report on the way in which Specsavers has adopted our award winning Behavioural Measurement Score® (BMS®) research methodology as a part of their comprehensive video mystery shopping programme.
    PiP’s relationship flourished with Specsavers receiving a luxurious coffee hamper from the Isle of Wight, which formed a part of the marketing team’s direct mail campaign. As a result of this, PiP successfully presented a complimentary video mystery shopping pilot for HQ to demonstrate the sophistication and in-depth analysis BMS® would enable them to measure. Specsavers is an experienced user of mystery shopping and therefore this level of analysis enabled them to take customer experience to the next level.
    Following Specsavers attendance at our BMS® Launch event in June last year, PiP conducted a video mystery shopping pilot across 15 stores which measured against their existing sales processes alongside the six key behaviours. The pilot proved to be another great success and confirmed Specsavers beliefs as a company.


    As the pilot, which incorporated BMS®, proved to provide a significant advantage to measuring customer experience, Specsavers agreed to a full video mystery shop programme across more than 740 stores. The programme was announced to the network at their Partner Conference in November last year. During the presentation the network were shown a compilation from their partners which reported on the huge success and advantages they have encountered from BMS® since the pilot. The video was a really powerful tool which demonstrated the ways in which BMS® made a significant impact and the success which followed after rolling it out across the partners.


    The customer insights team at Specsavers hosted a stand at the conference which displayed an array of BMS® branded merchandise. The range included: BMS® branded Rubik’s cubes, BMS® travel mugs which incorporated the six key behaviours and BMS® banner pens. The team were even wearing BMS® branded t-shirts! Following the launch of BMS® to the network at the conference, each store received a bundle which incorporated 6 ceramic mugs with each of the six key behaviours, BMS® Rubik’s cubes and BMS® banner pens. They are even in the process of designing BMS® postcards!

  • Your Move

    Your Move Estate Agents with 340 branches nationwide, commissioned Performance In People to carry out an extensive video mystery shopping exercise across their branch network.

    Performance in People sent their assessors posing as potential buyers into each of Your Move’s offices to enquire about local properties. Wearing hidden video cameras, they captured the entire customer experience and provided a full evaluation of the level of service offered together with the general image of the company.

    This programme was the first of its kind to be conducted nationally for a UK estate agency chain. Each Branch was scored on how staff presented themselves and the company, how they handled customer queries and their level of efficiency, knowledge and helpfulness. Your Move was also interested to see how effectively their computer based property viewing system, Preview, which streamlines the whole house buying and selling process for customers, was being used.

    Performance in People embarked on a training and development venture for the sales departments of kitchens, bathrooms, and conservatories within B&Q.

  • Volvo

    Performance in People, specialists at measuring and improving customer service and sales performance skills, has announced a programme with Volvo Car UK Ltd.

    Performance in People was hired by the car manufacturer to undertake an extensive mystery shopping and dealer coaching programme. It embarked on a range of mystery shopping programmes across Volvo's UK dealer network to measure and develop the behaviour required to deliver a better customer experience. In addition, it has organised a coaching programme to develop sales teams and managers to improve the customer experience.

In addition their proposal centered on fulfilling two key criteria, initially developing a bespoke web-reporting platform that provided seamless accessibility for appropriate personnel to all mystery shopping data, being able to review telephone calls, complete action planning and provide a suite of consolidated reporting, all available online. This facility also integrated with our centralized training function identifying training needs and ensuring implementation. Secondly PiP focused on the need to translate mystery shopping output into real changes in staff behaviour. This was achieved by delivering coaching skills training to all our sales managers together with a prescribed mechanism for reviewing the mystery shopping activity. The key to consistent improvement was through ensuring a consistent review process, not just for the staff featured within the mystery shop, but as a learning tool for all customer facing staff within each retailer."
